🔥 SAPL WEEK 1: THE RESULTS ARE IN

Week 1 is in the books... mostly. And after all the predictions, ratings and pre-season bravado, we've learned one very important thing: The spreadsheet is not the boss.

The first week produced dominant performances, genuine upsets, a ridiculous Beginner draw and a few results that have already made us rethink our early-season predictions.

🎯 GAME OF THE WEEK: EXACTLY WHY WE PICKED IT We called WRC 1 vs Team Apex our Game of the Week before a ball was hit. And now we feel pretty good about that call.

The WRC 1 ladies were incredible, winning their match 6–0, 6–0, 6–0. Then Team Apex's Men's Open pairing of Alex Papageorgiou + Damian Schlebusch came out and absolutely fired back, winning 6–0, 6–2, 6–1.

Then came the Men's Beginner match. And this is where it got ridiculous. 7–6, 6–7. That's it. Two sets. One each. No winner... Just absolute chaos. When we said this would be a game to watch, this is exactly what we meant. And the Intermediate battle was just as interesting, with WRC 1 taking it 2–1 despite Team Apex having the higher-rated pairing on paper.

Game of the Week delivered. 🎾

💣 THE BIGGEST RATING UPSETS One of the things we wanted to test this week was whether the Playtomic ratings would actually tell the story. They didn't. Not always, anyway.

🧨 WRC 1 Intermediate Team Apex came in with Tristan + Louis Minnaar, averaging around 3.45. WRC 1's pairing was lower-rated at around 3.05.

WRC 1 won 2–1. Upset. That's exactly the sort of result that reminds us that ratings are a starting point, not a crystal ball.

🐎 Padel Parq Kimiad B shock MK Padel MK's Men's Open pairing of Gareth Nunes + Riaan van den Berg came in around 4.23. Padel Parq Kimiad B were lower-rated. And then they won the Men's Open 2–1. That's a proper result. MK still won the overall fixture comfortably, but the Open upset is worth keeping an eye on.

🐟 The Fisher brothers deliver We said to watch Adrien + Cameron Fisher after hearing they had recently beaten Stuart + Mark in an Americano. Well... They went out in Men's Intermediate against Rally Rebels and won 3–0. The ratings may not have screamed superstar. The result certainly did. Keep watching the Fishers.

⚡ Proactive Wingate weren't joking We predicted Padel Parq Kimiad A vs Proactive Wingate as our Game of the Week contender and called an 8–8 draw. Well... That aged badly. Very badly. Proactive won 15–1.

They swept all four categories. Arno Scholtz and Rudolph van Biljon backed up the pre-season hype by winning Intermediate 6–1, 6–2, 6–3. And their Beginner pairing also won 3–0.

So perhaps our "too close to call" prediction should be renamed: "We clearly had no idea." 😂

👀 WHO SHOULD WE WATCH NOW? 🔥 PROACTIVE WINGATE After destroying our prediction, they have officially entered the conversation. 15–1 is not a result you ignore. They're no longer just a dangerous opposition. They're a team we need to watch very closely.

🐟 THE FISHER BROTHERS Adrien + Cameron came into the league without the biggest numbers attached to their names. They left Week 1 with a 3–0 Intermediate win. We're interested.

💣 TEAM APEX MEN'S OPEN Alex Papageorgiou + Damian Schlebusch were sensational. 6–0, 6–2, 6–1. That's not just a win. That's a statement. They also backed it up with the Intermediate pairing winning their category, despite losing that overall fixture to WRC 1.

👑 THRASHERS The pre-season favourite machine hasn't broken. Thrashers won the Ladies Open 6–1, 6–1, 6–1, won Intermediate 3–0, and took Men's Open 2–1. That's a very healthy Week 1. They look every bit as dangerous as we thought.

😬 AND WHAT ABOUT U-PRO? Remember when we predicted: U-Pro Invitational 15–1 Tayfin? Well... 15–1. Exactly. 😂

Egmond and Jacques did their part with a 6–0, 6–2, 6–2 Men's Open victory. The U-Pro Ladies then finished the job with their own 4–0 category win. So our most ridiculous-looking prediction of the week... was actually our only exact prediction. We'll take that.

🏆 WEEK 1: THE BIG PICTURE The current completed results show some very clear early messages. U-Pro Invitational looks every bit like the monster we expected. Thrashers are living up to the favourite tag. Proactive Wingate have suddenly gone from "dangerous opposition" to "please pay attention." Team Apex look particularly dangerous in Men's Open and Intermediate. WRC 1 have shown serious depth and, more importantly, that they can beat higher-rated opposition. And Padel Parq Kimiad A? After our dark-horse prediction, they probably won't appreciate us mentioning that they lost 15–1. But that's exactly why they're a dark horse.We haven't written them off yet. 😏

⏳ TWO FIXTURES STILL TO FINISH Not every Week 1 fixture has reached the full 16 available points yet. KOP RIETONDALE 2 vs U-PRO PADEL ATTERBURY Currently sitting at 7–5 with matches still outstanding. This one is still alive.

LIV vs WRC 4 Currently 12–0 to LIV with one category still outstanding. LIV have absolutely dominated the categories played so far, but there are still points left on the table. So Week 1 isn't completely finished yet. And those remaining matches could still change the early conference picture.

🎾 THE VERDICT We came into Week 1 saying: Ratings don't play padel. People do. Week 1 has already proved it.

We had rating upsets. We had a 7–6, 6–7 draw. We had a 15–1 demolition. We had the Fisher brothers announce themselves. We had Team Apex's Men's Open pairing put down a serious marker. We had Proactive Wingate completely destroy one of our predictions. And we had U-Pro do exactly what we said they would.

Not a bad first week. And this is only Week 1.
